Alnwick Town continued their unbeaten start to the new season with a 2-1 victory over Willington tonight.
First-half goals from Adam Shanks and Tony Brown secured the Northern League, Division Two victory, in what was the black ’n’ whites’ first home game of the 2014/15 campaign.
Aidan Gill set up a nervy finish with an 89th minute header, but Town held on for the victory.
It came on the back of Town’s 2-2 opening-day draw at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.
The St James’ Park side were comfortable throughout this evening’s fixture and could have ended with more goals to their name.
Shanks opened the scoring after 35 minutes with a fine looping effort over keeper Stephen Robinson.
The home side extended their lead on the stroke of half time when Brown smashed in from close range after a Brad McClelland knock down.
After the break, Shanks bent an effort just wide of the far post, while Brown hit the woodwork shortly after.
Willington offered little throughout the game, but Gill’s header from a corner made for a tense finish.
But Town did enough to make sure of the three points and they will aim to extend their unbeaten start to the season on Saturday when they travel to Esh Winning, who were smashed by Whickham tonight.
