Town give Colliers the boot from Sanderson Cup

SHILBOTTLE found Alnwick just too strong in the second half as they made their exit from the Sanderson Cup in this local derby at a sun-drenched Welfare Ground.

The opening half was fairly even with the Colliers creating the better chances. A good strike by Michael Brown was blocked near the line and a lobbed effort from Andy Metcalf cleared the bar with the Alnwick keeper out of position.

The interval arrived without a goal for either side but the position changed in Alnwick’s favour almost immediately following the restart.

A poor back pass failed to reach the Shilbottle keeper, leaving Neil McFarlane with a relatively simple task of poking the ball into an empty net.

The situation got worse for the Colliers when David Davison got onto a loose ball in the box to shoot home and give Alnwick a two-goal advantage.

The game was effectively settled on 70 minutes when a looping header from Neil McFall found the corner of the Shilbottle net and a further goal from Davison 10 minutes from time sealed the Colliers’ fate.

Shilbottle did pull a goal back five minutes from time when Shaun Black was up-ended in the box and Phil Grey converted the resulting penalty but it proved to be too little too late.
