Town crash out of cup to lower-league foes

NFA Minor Cup, Round Three

On a heavy pitch North Sunderland turned in a good performance to beat their local rivals, Alnwick Town Reserves, from the Northern Alliance.

The home side took an early lead through Stephen Hogg, but it was scant consolation for gutted manager Andrew Atkinson after one of their worst displays of the season.

The North Northumberland League side then levelled through a 35-yard effort from Neil MacFarlane.

Just before half-time the same player netted from a free-kick to give the visitors the advantage at half-time.

The game was again close after the start of the second half, but a goalkeeping error allowed Andrew Robertson to score a third for North Sunderland and late on another goalkeeping error saw Robertson net his second and North Sunderland’s fourth to see them progress into the fourth round.

○ Alnwick Town boss Paul Yeadon is aiming for nine points from his side’s remaining four matches in 2012, starting with a trip to Thornaby on Saturday (kick-off 3pm). Alnwick’s other Northern League Division Two festive fixtures include a Boxing Day visit to Morpeth Town.

Alnwick, whose match at Washington was called off last Friday, played last night in the cup. See our website for details.
