Alnmouth consolidated fourth spot in the league with a far from straightforward victory at South Shields against mid table Whitburn.

A two goal half time advantage was set up when first, quarter of an hour in, Reece Wright headed home Kevin Bell’s cross at the far post following the latter outwitting a series of opponents.

Johnny Graham added the second, slotting past ‘keeper Mark Symington after latching onto Wright’s defence splitting through ball.

Bell went close to increasing the lead but the home side had also earlier squandered a chance when Dan Wilson’s penalty was superbly saved by Mick Ashurst.

The home side had greater success with twenty minutes remaining however when Dan Nolan broke before laying off to Adam Newbrook who this time gave Ashurst no chance.

With all to play for, the game became end to end for the remainder but United’s nerves were settled five minutes from time with their third when Judd Donohoe, making his first appearance for the club this season, wrong-footed Symington from 12 yards to find the net after Graham’s supply.
