Shilbottle bounced back from an opening day defeat to trounce highly fancied Ponteland United in their midweek encounter at the Welfare Ground.

The visitors had started their campaign with a 7-1 victory but soon found themselves on the back foot against a highly motivated Colliers outfit.

The home side took the lead after only five minutes when Liam Brooks headed home at the back post.

The lead was doubled five minutes later when Ryan Douglas converted a direct free kick from the edge of the box.

The Colliers were now in full flow but a controversial incident on the half hour could well have had the potential to effect the whole game.

The Colliers were harshly penalised for a hand ball in the box, but from the resultant penalty, Sean Straker in the Shilbottle goal made a fine save. However, the referee’s assistant determined that the keeper had moved off his line prior to the spot kick and it had to be retaken.

From the second attempt, Straker made another cracking save and then launched the ball almost the full length of the field for Liam Brooks to volley over the Ponteland keeper’s head from fully 30 yards into the roof of the net to put his side three goals up.

The Colliers almost increased their lead further before the interval when Brooks had an effort just tipped over and Josh Hay shot just wide of a post.

The visitors opened brightly following the restart and pulled a goal back on 50 minutes through Zac Bewley, but the Colliers replied shortly after when Josh Hay headed home to restore the three-goal advantage.

The Colliers were now in complete control and two further goals from Hay on 70 and 75 minutes saw him complete his hat-trick and see his team to a resounding victory.
