THE young footballers of St Mary’s Middle School in Belford made history recently as they embarked on their school’s first overseas football tour.

As guests of the Malta FA and the ‘nursery’ of Hibernians FC of Malta, the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed the use of professional standard training facilities, practice matches against local sides and lots of sightseeing, including a behind-the-scenes tour of the national stadium.

As a climax to the trip, they were invited to take part in an international youth tournament hosted at the Hibs Stadium featuring all the local premier league clubs as well as teams from Burnley FC and Hereford United.

As well as performing well on the pitch, the whole squad proved themselves to be excellent ambassadors for their school and village.

The school is hoping this is the beginning of a relationship between St Mary’s and the people of Malta and a reciprocal tour is already being planned for later this year.
