River Coquet...7 East Chevington...0
Morpeth Sunday League, Division Two
ON a day when fools are at risk, the only fools at the Welfare were those who bet against a River win, as even with some key players unavailable they still ran out convincing winners.
Brad McClelland gave the Chev defence no end of bother early on before knocking in the perfect ball for Roper to rise high to open the scoring with a well-taken header at the far-post.
Recently-recalled John Robson then added the second of the game after a Sean Anderson shot was parried by the keeper only to the feet of Robson, who convincingly buried his shot before celebrating with Anderson.
The left foot of Joe Henderson then made it 3-0 to River at the interval, but after Sunderland showed that three goals mean nothing on Saturday, manager Ramsay’s main subject was complacency, which River rightly took on board.
In particular, Thompson, who had an extra spark to his game in the second half, assisting with the next two goals with inch-perfect crosses, the first for Roper to add his second and the second from man-of-the-match Marc Summers with a classic powerful defender’s header at the back post to take the score to 5-0.
With River continually pressing it was only inevitable that the score-line was added to and the impressive Joe Henderson was the man to do so with his sweet left foot burying a shot into the back of the net (6-0).
The seventh and final goal in this rout was to complete the hat-trick for Jordan Roper but not until Brad McClelland had shown off his silky skills inside the Chev box and a cheeky back-heel put the ball into the path of Roper, who blasted his shot into the back of the net (7-0).
Manager Leslie Ramsay could not have been more proud of his team – every man ran his socks off, especially Sean Anderson who had to spike his hair up after the game to compensate for the lack of legs after running them off.
