Longhoughton Rangers A...1

THIS game was due to be played at the beginning of December, but due to the weather and with a backlog of fixtures it was decided to meet on the Saturday and then play Cramlington Town in the NEYD Cup on the Sunday a fortnight ago.

It was a thrill just to play a game, never mind the novelty of playing on a full size 3G pitch at Prudhoe.

Both sides had to contend with a near gale force wind.

Rangers had this at their backs in the first half and used it to their advantage, holding Prudhoe in their own area for much of the first half.

The away side were guilty of squandering their chances with Daniel Troy, Ben Courty, Dominic Schiavetta and Jordan Beattie all seeing efforts skewed wide by the wind or saved.

Prudhoe posed a threat at times and they wasted a golden opportunity to take the lead when a great through-ball saw their striker clean through on goal, but the advancing Connor Scott in goal did enough to force the player to shoot early and wide.

The back four of Liam Tiffin, Matty Stephenson, Matthew Hunter and Jack Lane dealt well with every other threat and the midfield of Adam Jobson, Adam Weightman and Sheldon Ayre were first to most balls in the centre of the pitch.

An injury to Beattie just before half-time saw Michael Kirkup enter the fray to face the second-half headwind.

With it being a struggle to play into such a wind, Rangers kept the ball down and moved it between each other, waiting to carve an opening.

Scott in goal did a marvellous job with his goal-kicks considering the wind was blowing the ball toward him as he took his kicks.

Even with the headwind, it was Rangers who created the better opportunities, but again rushed shots were their downfall.

A great pass from Kirkup created the only goal of the game. The ball was picked up by Courty. He rounded several defenders before seeing his effort parried out to Troy who needed no second invitation to score (0-1).

Longhoughton: C Scott, J Lane,M Stephenson, M Hunter, L Tiffin, S Ayre, A Weightman, A Jobson, B Courty, J Beattie, M Kirkup, D Troy, D Schiavetta.
