Red Row Welfare 3 Heaton Rifles 0
NFA Minor Cup, Round Two
Red Row hosted Heaton Rifles from the Tyneside league in Round Two of the NFA Minor Cup.
In wintry conditions, the home team kicked off facing a strong wind, keeping the ball on the ground.
Red Row, of the North Northumberland League, were playing well, but not creating many chances. The visitors did not take advantage of the wind and never tested home keeper John Charlton.
It was a heavy slog in midfield, but Small and Smith were getting the better of the Rifles, as were the wide men Luke Baston and Mark Nixon and at half-time, the score was 0-0.
The second half started with a bang when keeper Charlton’s long clearance fell to Sean Palmer, who beat the defence for pace and fired the ball past the away keeper.
The Rifles had a good chance shortly after, but a good save from Charlton kept Red Row in the game.
The second goal came on the hour with Jordan Giles breaking on the left to play in Sean Palmer for his second.
Two home substitutions followed with Garry Reed and Shaun Black appearing.
The Rifles never stopped trying and Charlton again saved well from Stoker when the forward’s low shot was saved at the expense of a corner.
The result was not in doubt when Garry Reed fired home from 10 yards to make the game safe.
All Red Row players played well in horrid conditions, but keeper John Charlton deserved his man-of-the-match for the clean sheet.
