A quickfire double as half-time approached was enough to secure Alnwick Town all three points this afternoon – their first win since the middle of November.
Town welcomed Heaton Stannington to St James’ Park today looking to end a run which has seen them collect one point from their last four matches in Northern League, Division Two.
The visitors suffered an early setback when two injuries meant they had to play the rest of the game with 10 men.
However, it looked as though the black ‘n’ whites had failed to capitalise when Alnwick were awarded a penalty but Adam Shanks had his spot-kick saved.
Shanks made amends soon after when his cross was headed home by Stephen Hogg before Tony Brown finished off a slick passing move.
An uneventful second 45 minutes was just what the doctor ordered for the hosts. Not only was this Town’s first win in all competitions since November 15, but their very first clean sheet of the season.
