Rangers’ six-shooters burst Ashington’s bubble

Rangers continued their unbeaten run in 2013 with a win against a resurgent Ashington.

The visitors took the game to Rangers in the opening 10 minutes and it was not long before Rangers again found themselves a goal down early on (0-1).

The goal spurred the home side into life and on 15 minutes Josh Turnbull brought things level after running onto a through- ball and outpacing the Ashington defence and slotting past the keeper (1-1).

Ashington regained the lead shortly after (1-2).

Stand-in keeper Jake Allan pulled off an outstanding stop to prevent Ashington from extending their lead further.

Rangers then stepped up another gear and a brace from Longhoughton striker Sam Wright, which included a sublime chip, saw the home side go into the interval 3-2 up, both goals were assisted by Mark Statton who was having by far his best game of the season.

The second half saw Rangers start to dominate, central defenders Brendan Clapcott and Jack Robson mopping up everything that was thrown at them and full-backs Jordan Briggs and Wil Archbold backing up confidently when needed.

Rangers extended their lead after a great cross by Cameron Batey was coolly diverted in by Josh Pusey (4-2). George Lindley was introduced and, despite not being fully match fit, gave a solid performance in midfield.

Pusey was on the scoresheet again as he took advantage of the visiting goalkeeper’s handling error on the goal-line to hammer home his second (5-2).

The visitors were not finished, however, and, after springing the Longhoughton offside trap, made it 5-3.

Josh Turnbull then scored Longhoughton’s sixth goal and put the tie beyond doubt (6-3).
