Rangers edge through in derby

Alnwick Town...1

Longhoughton Rangers...2

RANGERS make hard work of their first derby game away against Division 5 high-flyers Alnwick Town in the Preliminary Round of the league cup.

Longhoughton got off to the best possible start on a wet Sunday morning at Alnwick Town’s Greensfield pitch with Rangers’ Paul Anderson finding the net in the only the second minute of the game.

This appeared to wake up the Alnwick side and they immediately applied pressure and looked threatening especially down the right-wing. Rangers defender Archbold was having a busy afternoon.

Further chances fell to Rangers with Lindley and Turnbull both firing wide.

On 10 minutes, Alnwick equalised after a perfect cross was met by an equally impressive header by Alnwick’s tall midfielder.

Longhoughton regained the lead on 20 minutes after a neat one-two between McKewan and Turnbull saw a perfect ball through to the unmarked Anderson, who finished with ease.

Further chances for both teams came and went and both keepers were kept busy.

The majority of the second half was played in Alnwick’s half as Rangers pushed to extend their lead.

Rangers’ defenders Clapcott and Robson were solid and kept keeper Slack with little to do.

Rangers’ Coxford was playing in an unfamiliar role in midfield but had a couple of attempts from distance.

With Alnwick’s resolute defending and Rangers’ inability to hit the target with any venom, Alnwick were always in the game. Indeed the home side did find the net in the dying minutes only for the goal to be disallowed after the ball struck a player in an offside position on its way into the net.

The hard-fought game ended with Rangers progressing through to the next round but with Alnwick’s pride still intact after they pushed Rangers hard throughout the game.
