Alnwick Town Pythons U11 football team wore black armbands and participated in a minute’s silence before kick-off to show respect for the loss of Eric Hately, who was one of the founders of Alnwick Town Junior Football.

The game was played in a spirit that Eric would have been proud of.

Alnwick were 2-1 up at half-time, thanks to Eithan Balmbra’s two goals, set up by Dylan Scott.

Alnwick started the second half well, with Matthew Conway winning the ball high up the field, beating his defender and scoring to make it 3-1.

Matthew Conway hit the post minutes later.

Ashington threw everything at Alnwick and crafted a well-worked goal to pull it back to 3-2, then Ashington capitalised on a mistake to bring it back level 3-3.

Connor Jones was denied by Ashington goalkeeper moments before Eithan Balmbra received the ball from Matthew Stewart, then ran past a defender to slot past the keeper with the winner and to get his hat-trick with a minute left.

Alnwick had to battle for all the points with Ashington having three chances cleared at the end thanks to Tyler Cooke and his defenders.
