Players mourn loss of Jackie

FOOTBALLERS from yesteryear were among the congregation at St Cuthbert’s Church, Amble, on Friday to pay their respects to John (Jackie) Coxford.

Jackie, who died at the age of 83, played for Amble FC in the club’s heyday in the ’50s and ’60s during which they won numerous league and cup honours in the Northern Alliance.

He was talented and tenacious and played a vital role in the club’s success.

He also played for Alnwick Town and Ashington and in his earlier days had a spell at Barnsley.

A miner, he possessed a rare passion for the game and always gave of his best.

In later life, he was an enthusiastic fisherman.
