What will Newcastle United do with John Carver after Derby County sack Steve McClaren

John Carver has told Lee Charnley to take his time before appointing Newcastle United’s next head coach – as Steve McClaren became available after being sacked as Derby County boss.

Managing director Charnley will this week assess the the candidates, including Carver, to succeed Alan Pardew on a permanent basis.

Carver, handed the job for the second half of the season, had been keen to know his position before he went on holiday tomorrow.

But asked if he still wanted a quick decision, the 50-year-old said: “I’m not bothered about that – I’m going to go away and enjoy myself now.

“The one thing I will say is that when I took this on four or five months ago is that I wanted it permanently, and my opinion hasn’t changed.

“I still want the job. Even if we had got relegated, I would still have wanted the job.

“I would love the summer to build the team and show people I can do this job.”

McClaren turned down an approach by Newcastle at the beginning of the month after failing to lead Derby into the Championship play-offs.

He had stated his desire to stay at the Rams for another tilt at promotion, but the Derby board decided to dispense with his services.

McClaren is believed to have been Charnley’s first choice for the head coach role since Pardew’s departure and there was an initial approach in January which was rebuffed. It remains to be seen whether the Newcastle chief will return a third time for McClaren, or give Carver another chance at the role.
