No room for egos as Newcastle United fight for safety says Vurnon Anita

John Carver’s side are two points above third-from-bottom Hull City with two games left to play.

A win over already-relegated Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road this afternoon could be enough to secure the club’s Premier League status.

Anita’s versatility seen him play in both full-back positions – and midfield – in recent weeks, with Carver’s options having been limited by a series of injuries and suspensions.

“We still have our future in our own hands, so we just have to concentrate on our own games and try to win them,” said Anita.

“I just want to help the team, so it doesn’t matter to me whether I play in the midfield or the defence. Everybody needs to put their ego aside and fight as one.

“If we win our game, we are guaranteed to have things in our own hands in the final game of the season. That is the most important thing. We do not want to get into a situation where we are relying on other teams.

“We need to leave the past behind and just fight for these last two games and really give it our all.

“We need to try to stay up, that is the most important thing. You need to be focused on that as players. With help from everybody at the club, we need to fight and get the job done.”

Anita played well at right-back against West Bromwich Albion last weekend in the absence of the suspended Daryl Janmaat.

But Janmaat will return from a one-game ban against QPR, and Anita – who has found his opportunities limited this season – could again find himself on the bench.

Carver said: “Wherever you ask him to play, he goes into the game with the same attitude and commitment. When he comes out of the team he accepts it.”
