Morpeth lose out at the death

Morpeth Town 1 North Shields 2 Ebac Northern League, Division Two

IT was last-minute heartache for the Highway Men as North Shields came away with all three points on Wednesday night.

In a first half dominated by Morpeth, the visitors had goalkeeper McCafferty to thank for maintaining parity at half time. Two exceptional saves to deny both Chilton and Anderson kept the score at 0-0.

Against the run of play with their first shot on target, Douglas was able to open the scoring for the North Tyneside team from close range on 55 minutes.

From the restart, the hosts continued to take the game to their opponents. After 15 minutes of good pressure, Hall equalised with a thunderbolt from 25 yards.

Dines through the middle and Wright out wide continued to drive the Highway Men forward in search of the winner. Chances came and went as the desperate Shields defenders held on.

Then deep into injury time, Morpeth conceded a free kick on the halfway line.

A long ball forward found Holmes and with just about the last kick of the game, he gave North Shields a very fortuitous victory.
