Bamburgh Castle 3 Wansbeck AFC 3
Sportsworld North Northumberland Football League, Division One
In a well-contested match, Bamburgh shaded the first half. Jonny Johnson’s goal-bound header was cleared off the line midway through the half before the same player opened the scoring from the left with a tidy finish on 42 minutes. Half-time: 1-0.
Danny Johnson extended the lead from inside the box on 51 minutes (2-0) and, soon after, Bamburgh forced a Wansbeck own-goal which the referee disallowed. Wansbeck then enjoyed their best spell, netting three times in 13 minutes. Jamie Graham lobbed the keeper (2-1), then a surging run down the left saw an accurate cross fall to the unmarked Mitchell Fawcus, who had plenty of time to fire home (2-2).
The game was turned on its head when Graham grabbed his second and Wansbeck’s third with 20 minutes to go (2-3).
However, Bamburgh finished strongly as James Dixon fed Johny Johnson, who forced a great save from Ricky Gibson. Johnson then headed Bamburgh level (3-3) in a frantic final few minutes as the home side sought victory.
Indeed, David Lillico thought he had won it for Bamburgh, firing home a squared pass at the death, and, although the referee initially pointed to the centre, he then chalked off the goal for off-side, much to Bamburgh’s frustration.
