Alnmouth United 4 Rothbury 0
North Northumberland Football League, Division One
Another comfortable, if at times rather lacklustre, performance stretched Alnmouth United’s lead at the head of the table to 12 points.
Alnmouth forged ahead midway through the first period through Matt Robson, following Jorden Frost’s supply down the wing to Andrew Murray who squared to the scorer six yards out.
Other incidents before the change-around saw Peter Murray denied by a post. Although home keeper Mick Ashurst was rarely involved, he did have to block a one-one-one break from Rothbury’s Chris Coe, while the same player miss-hit another effort from a similar opening.
Ten minutes into the second period, United doubled the advantage when neat interplay involving Andrew Martin, Liam Jefferson and Robson set Andrew Murray up to convert from close range.
Brett Rogerson was unlucky to see one of his trademark pile-drivers stay out after striking the bar, then post, but breathing space was created soon after when a Jefferson centre to the back post resulted in the bar rattling again from Peter Murray’s header, but Sheldon Ayre was on hand to bundle home.
Murray was to have better luck for the fourth, reacting first to the loose ball after visiting keeper Appleby saved from a Jefferson volley.
