Alnmouth United 4 Wansbeck AFC 1
North Northumberland League, Division One
Alnmouth United’s six-point advantage at the top of Division One and their maximum-points run was preserved after a comfortable win over one of the main challengers, Wansbeck.
The home side’s crisp passing game, not always on display on the day, was evident for the opener as Dane Dawson, Andrew Martin and Liam Jefferson combined before Matt Robson split the defence to set Peter Murray on goal which he found, slotting past Ricky Gibson from 15 yards (1-0).
Having just threatened the goal, Robson doubled the lead on 35 minutes, making no mistake following Ryan Taylor’s supply (2-0).
The luxury of a three-goal margin arrived a couple of minutes after the interval when Martin’s ball-winning and penetrating run down the left fed Taylor, who outfoxed the Wansbeck defence before rounding the keeper to stroke into the empty net (3-0).
Another flowing one-touch move produced number four as, with good advantage played, the fouled Peter Murray’s pass to Taylor down the right was promptly squared across to the left for Andrew Murray to hit a first-time drive past Gibson from 18 yards (4-0).
The fifth seemed only a matter of time, and Taylor appeared to have registered it but his crafted, curling effort from 20 yards was somehow tipped onto the angle. He was denied by the keeper again, this time from the penalty-spot after he’d been tripped.
The points apparently secured, other home players tried their luck with notably Brett Rogerson and the marauding Reece Wright going close but a clean sheet was denied them again as, expecting an offside flag in response to Michael Freathy’s through-ball, Jamie Graham ran on to fire past Mick Ashurst in the home goal five minutes from time (4-1).
