North Northumberland League Bilclough Cup, Round One

ALNMOUTH eased through to round two of the Bilclough Cup but their much-improved performance than of late, including a Rob Morton treble, was overshadowed by the broken leg suffered by defender John Winter on 77 minutes, which cut short the proceedings.

The visitors forged ahead on the quarter-hour when Dan Humphrey connected with Liam Roper’s cross to blast home at the back post. Morton doubled the lead from the penalty spot after a foul on Scott Fulton. The same scorer made it three just before the break with a looping back header over Donny Clark following Stephen Carey’s centre.

Consecutive strikes from Morton saw him achieve a perfect hat-trick early into the second period, finding the target at the end of an intricate move involving Craig Rutherford, Russell Stalker, Roper and Fulton. The two strikers were replaced by Ryan Taylor and Stuart Oman and both quickly made their mark.

Taylor latched onto Stalker’s through-ball, before holding off the attention of defenders to find the roof of the net.

Oman added the sixth with an assist from Taylor before the tie – already emphatically settled – came to a premature end when a challenge resulted in the tragic finish.
