Longhoughton Ladies were knocked out of the League Cup despite a valiant 10-player display.
The girls travelled to Blakelaw Utd for the first round of the cup on a bright Sunday afternoon.
From the onset it was clear both teams wanted the victory, however, advantage went to Blakelaw who started with a full-strength squad to Rangers’ 10 players.
Blakelaw pressured from the whistle and scored a very early goal although hard battling and determination saw Longhoughton rewarded with an equaliser through Sally Dawson, who shot beautifully into the left-hand side of the net to score her first of the season.
Rangers defended well as a team and tackled strongly, seeing some goal-line clearances and fantastic saves from Price.
Graham and Taylor in defence led the back-line and linked up well to the midfield of Dawson, Ryder and Baxter, but Blakelaw went on a rampant attack scoring a further three before half-time.
After some words from their coach, Longhoughton started the second half with all guns blazing – some fantastic teamwork saw them grabbing a second goal; again, Dawson beat the keeper with a long-range strike into the top corner.
Longhoughton continued to put pressure onto Blakelaw through dogged work from Dalby, Roach, Scott and Graham, creating chances that Rangers weren’t able to convert.
They began to get into their stride and controlled the game, playing the ball around the park until a late head injury to Ryder saw the game change direction.
A substitution to Blakelaw during this interval caught Rangers off-guard and they netted a further two goals at the stroke of full-time.
