Lucy Staniforth is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after a scan revealed she has suffered a cruciate ligament injury during training with Liverpool Ladies.
The new signing from Bristol Academy left the Select Security Stadium on crutches after falling awkwardly in the latter stages of training on Tuesday.
And a scan yesterday revealed that the England U23 star, from Alnwick, has sustained an injury to the opposite anterior cruciate ligament to which the midfielder injured last season while at Bristol.
Liverpool Ladies manager Matt Beard said: “We are absolutely devastated for Lucy that she has suffered another cruciate ligament injury. Lucy will receive the full support of everyone at Liverpool during this difficult time for her.
“Lucy remains a key part of my plans for the future and I have no doubt that she will return a better and stronger player.”
It is likely that Staniforth will miss the majority, if not all, of the upcoming season.
