Hot-shot Gareth guides Rothbury to glory

Felton U10 3 Rothbury Rovers U10 8

Glendale League, U10

A sumptuous strike by Gareth Rickaby placed the seal on a great win for Rothbury Rovers over Felton.

Rothbury’s feisty opponents made their Under 10 counterparts work hard for their triumph as they refused to buckle under unrelenting Rothbury pressure.

Yet, as the Rothbury defence hesitated, it was Felton that struck first (1-0).

The goal saw Rothbury go behind in a game for the first time this season and it appeared that luck was not on their side. They all had their heads in their hands when a second Rickaby rocket shot hit one post before bouncing back into play from the other upright.

Yet both Gareth Rickaby and Rothbury stuck to their task and were soon level from a crisp Rickaby cross-shot (1-1). Rothbury finished the half in the lead when Fraser Rutherford instinctively deflected the ball home from a Rothbury corner (1-2).

The second half began with Rothbury finding their passing game. First David O’Dowd found Charlie Scope-Hall who then played a square ball into the path of an on-running Gareth. His instant strike flew unerringly into the top corner of the Felton goal (1-3). Gareth fired a free-kick gloriously into the Felton net (1-4).

Felton attempted an audacious comeback. A swiftly taken throw-in saw a Felton attacker advance on Niall Murtagh in the Rothbury goal and a thumping finish gave Felton their second goal. Two soon became three after a superb finish by Felton’s number nine (3-4).

But Rothbury got back on track as Charlie Hall-Scope scored from less than a yard.

At last, Rothbury looked in control and Rickaby made it six on the break. David O’Dowd scored their seventh from a set-piece before Rickaby sealed the victory, beating three defenders before majestically driving the ball home.
