Rob Elliot is looking for Newcastle United to build on two massive victories

Beating Liverpool at home and Tottenham away has lifted spirits massively on Tyneside.

And the visit of struggling Aston Villa tomorrow provides a real chance to maintain a climb up the Premier League table.

“Momentum is massive,” said Elliot, who was awarded the man-of-the-match accolade at White Hart Lane.

“Confidence breeds good performances and it breeds good character.

“But we’ve got to be careful of being over confident – it’s what we have been guilty of in the past.

“We’ve been too confident and gone on a downward spiral, so I think we have to work as hard as we can to make sure we’re pushing on.

“Aston Villa are down there with us. We can’t take it for granted and we’ve got to work even harder and give them more respect because they’re fighting just like we are.

“We are trying to turn a corner but we can’t just think we’ve done it now, after two games against better opposition.”

Modest Elliot played down his award in North London despite making some fine saves, especially in the first half when Spurs finally broke the deadlock six minutes before the break.

“I don’t think I deserved it (the man-of-the-match award) – I think you could have picked anyone.

“There were some outstanding performances, but obviously it’s a nice personal thing.

“It was frustrating to concede just before half-time, but the character and the way we rallied was good.

“It was vocal at half-time, but it was all positive.

“We knew we had done all the right things and we’d worked hard, but we didn’t quite create what we wanted to going forward.

“We decided to press up the pitch a bit more, get after them a bit more.

“Tottenham are a top team that have been on a great run, but we knew we were still in the game. I thought the character we showed to go on and win the game was fantastic.”

Elliot had special praise for goalscorers Aleksander Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez.

“To have those two coming on and giving us fresh legs, we were quite blessed really,” he added.

“That’s part of the squad and the team spirit we have. It is a squad game.

“I started the season as number three, and some of the boys started on the bench and now they’re coming on to score.

“We’ve got to make sure it’s a squad game - whoever is coming in needs to make the most of it, and bring good things to the team.”

Elliot stresses, though, the importance of taking one game at a time.

“We go into the Villa game looking at that, and not looking beyond it,” he said.

“The table, as much as everyone looks at it, we can’t look at it too much, we just have to look at the next game each time.

“Hopefully, at the end of the season, we can look back and say we’ve achieved something, but if we take our foot off the gas we can’t.”
