Half Moon hit a dozen past Argyle

ROUND One of the ES Johnson Challenge Cup got under way yesterday and Division One side Stakeford Half Moon got their cup campaign off to an impressive start with a 12-0 win at Division Two’s Alnmouth Argyle.

Bomarsund Social Club went through following a 4-1 win at Morpeth Chantry. Liam Marshall grabbed the goal for Chantry, but goals from Ross Muter and Craig Thompson, with a brace apiece, won it for the visitors.

A solitary strike from Craig Keen was enough to put Red Row Brick Club through at the expense of Newbiggin Bankhouse.

IN Division One, goals from Brad Wake, Shaun Taylor and Ross Gair (two) put Amble Pier 81 four goals up at half-time against their hosts Woodhorn Lane.

The home side mounted a second-half fightback, and a hat-trick from Andy Spratt gave Pier 81 a scare. The visitors held out however, to secure the three points.

Stobswood Welfare and Bedlington Barrington Arms shared a point in a 2-2 draw.

AFTER being involved in a ten-goal thriller on the opening day, Blackthorn Rovers were again part of a high-scoring encounter in Division Two.

They travelled to Felton and returned on the wrong end of a 5-3 result. Craig Appleby helped himself to all three of Rovers’ tally, but a brace from Ross Jackson and goals from Tony Brown, James Dixon and Gareth McCann saw Felton home.

Village Inn, Longframlington followed their opening-day draw with a good 7-2 win at Morpeth Riverside Lodge.

Stuart Douglas scored two superb long-range goals to put Ashington RAOB on the way to a 4-0 victory over River Coquet FC. Kevin Towers and Craig Robinson bagged the others.

North End Trap beat local rivals East Chevington 8-0. Darren Smith notched half the total and was joined among the goals by Rob Morton, Mark Oman, Jonathan Shepherd and David Mavin.
