Five goals in the final quarte- hour saw Ashington secure an 8-3 win over a gallant Alnwick Town at St James’ Park on Friday in a pre-season friendly.
Marc Walton struck a hat-trick for the victors in an entertaining game played in the evening sunshine between these two Northern League sides.
But the Colliers’ win was not as comprehensive as the scoreline suggests.
The unexpected late goals avalanche left the home side shell-shocked.
Ashington, of Northern League Division One, went ahead in the tenth minute through Stephen Young.
Division Two side Alnwick drew level in the 21st minute when James Jackson fired in from 20 yards.
Things got better for Alnwick when Jon Colley put Town ahead just after the half-hour.
But the visitors equalised five minutes before the break when Walton scored a 22-yard free-kick.
The same player scored his second just after the hour – his glancing header putting Ashington 3-2 ahead.
But Alnwick made it 3-3 when Paul Hodge slotted into an empty net.
Then came the final flourish from the Colliers.
Walton made it 4-3, completing his hat-trick in the process, before Gareth Bainbridge made it 5-3.
Stephen Buzzeo then scored goals six and seven.
The scoring was completed a minute from time when Bainbridge rifled in from the edge of the area.
On Tuesday, Alnwick drew 1-1 with South Shields, with Colley scoring for Town in the pre-season clash.
Alnwick’s up-coming pre-season games are Heaton Stannington, away, on Saturday, at 3pm, and Bedlington Terriers, at home, on Wednesday, at 7.30pm.
