ALNWICK TOWN 2 WILLINGTON 2
A bad-tempered clash between Alnwick Town and Willington ended all-square tonight.
The feisty Northern League, Division Two affair finished 2-2, with Tom Vickers snatching a late draw for Town.
His far-post header came just minutes after Corey Nicholson had put Willington 2-1 ahead against the run of play.
But this enthralling match was marred by an off-the-ball incident midway through the second half which led to both sides reduced in numbers.
Willington keeper Ryan Mundell and colleague Aidan Goodey were shown their marching orders, while Town’s Dale Kennedy was sent off for the hosts.
The first half was more mundane in comparison.
Town hitman Keith Douglas opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a fine shot from distance. Willington levelled 10 minutes later when Nicholson broke the offside trap before calmly slotting past Brian Brooks.
Then came that action-packed second half. Town, with the man advantage for most of the second period, looked the most likely to take all three points.
Both Tony Brown and Douglas hit the woodwork as the hosts piled on the pressure.
But in the end, after Nicholson looked as though he had won the game for the visitors, Town will be relieved to take something from the game.
It is also another point in the bank for the St James’ Park side, who went into tonight’s clash fourth-from-bottom.
