Down to earth after first day victory

After last week’s opening day victory, Alnmouth were brought back down to earth after an eight goal mauling at the hands of Gateshead FC’s development team - despite holding out until first half injury time.

Gateshead used the 3G pitch next to the stadium which handed a further advantage to them.

Trying to match Gateshead’s passing and movement, United still harboured hopes of continuing to frustrate and catch their opponents on the break the longer they resisted but the psychological boost of a goal-less first half was cruelly snatched away with virtually the last kick when Olly Leedham slotted past Alnmouth’s top performer on the day - Mick Ashurst.

The visitors attempted to go on the offensive after the turnaround and the Murray brothers combined dangerously and there looked to be hope until the lead was doubled on 55 minutes and two more were added before Peter Murray reduced the deficit, finding the net direct from a free kick.

Any hopes of a revival were short lived, however, as the students were relentless in their drive and added more as the shell-shocked Seasiders in the end looked only to limit the damage. The Gateshead scorers were: Olly Leedham: 4, Meesh Kanda: 2, Jack Elliot and Nick Cassidy.

Alnmouth United: M Ashurst, R Jones, J Frost, J Mowbray, D Dawson (J Reid), P Murray, S Anderson,

M Brown (B Rogerson), A Murray, R Taylor (O Evans), K Hay.

Alnmouth will have faced another stern test last night at home to Hazelrigg Victory with a trip to

Forest Hall on Saturday.
