Lowick United Ladies 1 Durham Wildcats 5
Lowick United welcomed fellow league newcomers Durham Wildcats, the university’s representative team, to New Barber Park.
And the away side, who made the last 32 of the FA Cup last season, had an ‘international’ look to them with five USA football scholarship students in their starting 11.
A great example of support play saw Lowick fall behind after 14 minutes when a smart move was followed up and slotted away by the midfielder. Lowick nearly equalised when a looping shot from Bolton bounced over the keeper and the bar before the Wildcats extended their lead on 38 minutes when a clearance fell to the striker who beat two players and chipped a perfect shot into the top-left corner.
Lowick almost got a goal back just before half-time when Stewart was freed by a pass from Patterson and rounded the keeper, she just had to knock the ball into the net but an excellent last-ditch sliding tackle thwarted the chance before she could pull the trigger.
In the second half, two almost identical moves were to prove the undoing of Lowick as the Wildcats turned to a more direct style of play with a central long ball that was missed and finished with style by the strikers twice to make it 4-0. Lowick, who never know when they are beaten, refused to be cowed by the score-line and grabbed a fine goal back after 67 minutes when Patterson kept up her great recent scoring run from a captain Tang free-kick. The last word, however, was to be the Wildcats’, with a fifth goal on 75 minutes.
The game was sponsored by Lauren and Hayden Shepherd, who were special guests and mascots for the day. Lowick United are on their travels again this week at Tynedale.
