Cup run continues

Newbiggin...1 Red Row Welfare...2

North Northumberland League, Robson Cup, Preliminary Round

RED Row were narrow winners when the top two teams from Division Two met in the Robson Cup on Saturday.

The visitors, who were already missing Robert Baker through work commitments, were forced to shuffle the pack again after losing Alex Potts and Dan Palmer early on to shoulder and knee injuries respectively.

Newbiggin almost opened the scoring, Tony Messenger striking it wide when one-on-one with Marc Mavin. As the game started to ebb and flow, Red Row should have been awarded a penalty when Darren Smith was brought down inside the box.

Marc Nixon then forced the Newbiggin keeper into a fine save and Jordan Giles headed narrowly over the bar, before the in-form Bell pounced on some slack defending to finish clinically and break the deadlock.

Newbiggin then started throwing their weight around and biting into tackles and had chances to level but a combination of good goalkeeping from Mavin and poor finishing from Newbiggin’s strikers ensured Red Row went in 0-1 up at half-time.

Just into the second half Sean Anderson played in Kevin Bell, who outpaced his defenders before expertly chipping the oncoming goalkeeper to score his and Red Row’s second of the game (0-2).

Newbiggin fought back strongly but found clear-cut chances hard to carve out. Messenger finally found a way through Red Row’s defence and played a shot across goal that was bundled in.

Red Row broke forward again and had another penalty appeal turned down for handball before Mavin tipped over the bar with what proved to be a match-winning save, ensuring Red Row’s place in the next round of the cup.
