Cup game called off amid violent scenes

Wooler 1 Willington Quay Saints 0

Ideal Stelrad NFA Minor Cup, Round Two

Unsavoury scenes towards the end of this Minor Cup clash led to the game being abandoned.

The heat was turned up in the second period, as Wooler felt their players were being targeted by a series of professional fouls by the Saints.

On the hour, Wooler’s Luke Strangeways was fouled and the referee awarded a penalty. After a lengthy stoppage while Willington argued with the ref, Strangeways netted from the spot.

The visitors started to lose their cool and play was abandoned following an incident in the Willington goalmouth involving the goalkeeper.

As scuffles broke out several players had to be restrained. After things eventually calmed down, the referee decided not to resume the match.

It was a sad end to a match which had started in decent fashion.

Saints were looking more likely to score and playing the better football, but neither side were able to create any clear-cut chances and both defences looked fairly solid.

Willington looked dangerous from set-pieces and Wooler had to defend well from a series of corners, but Wooler began to play their way back into the contest and carved out some chances.
