Bilclough Cup, Quarter-Finals
On a day dominated by cup competitions, victories for Bamburgh Castle, Lowick United and Wooler Reserves saw them all through to the semi-finals.
Victories for Tweedmouth Harrow, Wansbeck and North Sunderland saw them all through to the next round of the Laidler Lancaster Cup.
Craster Rovers were hosting Lowick United and it was the visitors who progressed with the only goal of the game coming from Marco Lambert.
The shock result of the day saw Wooler Reserves beat Springhill 3-2, with goals from Jack Strangeways and a Kyle Jeffrey double.
Springhill’s goals were both scored by Richard Green.
Alnmouth Utd 1 Bamburgh Castle 2
Bamburgh progressed to the semi-finals of the Bilclough Cup after coming from behind at league leaders Alnmouth, who also missed a late lifeline penalty.
United lead at the break thanks to an impressive Peter Murray left-foot looping effort from outside the area.
The home front-line of Judd Donohoe and Jordan Frost went close to increasing the lead while at the other end and as the half drew to a close, Johnny Johnson looked odds-on to equalise as he broke clear, but for Mick Ashurst’s acrobatic save.
The tie was turned on its head midway through the second period when Johnson found success, this time against Ashurst, after having been played through by Darren Egdell.
Five minutes later and the visitors were in front as Egdell’s stooping header six yards out converted Danny Johnson’s cross.
A late challenge presented the home side with the opportunity to prolong the encounter, but Antony Parkin between the posts was equal to Murray’s spot-kick and although they laid siege to the visitors’ goal for the remaining ten minutes, Bamburgh’s defence held strong.
