Coquet claim victory in battle of the Rivers

Morpeth Riverside...2 River Coquet...4

RIVER Coquet travelled to Morpeth on a fine August morning to face new league club Morpeth Riverside in another friendly.

The game started well with River putting that extra little bit of pressure onto the Morpeth back four.

Gary Taylor had the first shot of the game saved by the Morpeth number one, leading to the first of five early corners.

With Andy Taylor taking up a more attacking role, he used his height advantage to win any high balls pumped upfield.

The breakthrough came when brotherly companionship shone as Gary played the ball through for brother Andy to beat the offside trap and lob the ball over the advancing keeper.

Once again, River took the lead only to see it last a short while as a free-kick was conceded on the edge of the box.

The resulting spot-kick was scored after a misjudgement by the keeper to take the score to 1-1.

Keeper Straker made up for his earlier misdemeanour by once again pulling off an acrobatic save to take the two teams into half-time at 1-1.

The second half started like the first, at a bright, fast pace, only for River to concede a second free-kick outside the box which was quickly taken as the River defence still tried to sort out the wall, only for the ball to nestle in the back of sub keeper Scott’s net.

Morpeth won another hotly-disputed free-kick after a tame call for handball was awarded only for the free-kick to be saved by Scott for a corner.

The resulting corner gave River a quick break down the right flank, with Dobie playing a ball in for substitute Brown to bring the scores back level with a header.

With the game looking like it was going to end in a stalemate, River seemed to step up a gear and took the first of two quick goals after substitute Row crossed from the right for fellow sub Brown to claim his brace with a fine diving header at the near post.

The final goal of the game was decided by the ‘dubious goals panel’ after captain Andy Taylor hit a vicious shot from just inside the box with Robson claiming the final touch and the panel agreeing in Robson’s favour to add to his man-of-the-match performance.
