The former Blackburn Rovers and Gateshead forward made his debut in last Saturday’s pre-season friendly against Hartlepool United – less than 48 hours after officially putting pen-to-paper on a one-year deal at Croft Park.

Thomson wasted little time in making an impression on his new team-mates as he scored twice in an eventful 2-2 draw against the National League club.

The two sides will meet once again at Croft Park this Saturday afternoon as Spartans continue their preparations for the new National League North season.

Thomson is confident that his new side can continue the improvement they have made during pre-season and build some momentum ahead of their first competitive game of the new campaign.

“I was just happy to get a game in because it’s been ages since I played before lockdown,” he explained.

“Scoring twice was great and a real boost, any forward wants to get off the mark early when they join a new club.

“I haven’t seen much of the the lads, but there’s a great group of lads here and I feel like everyone has clicked.

“There is nobody staying out of the group, we are all in it together really.

“Obviously, I was happy to get the goals against a side from the league above us and one that has been tipped to challenge for the play-offs this season.

“But personally, and as a team, I just have to take the positives from that and build on it before the new season starts.”
