Colliers scrape a win

Shilbottle CW...2 Stobswood Utd...1

Sportsworld North Northumberland League, Division One

SHILBOTTLE just came out on top of this close encounter at a windswept Welfare Ground.

The Colliers opened brightly in difficult conditions and had the bulk of the early play.

They should have taken the lead when Alan Wallace had a good chance but failed to lob the Stobswood keeper.

However, they did break the deadlock on the half-hour when good work by Shaun Black saw his ball into the box forced home from close range by Alan Wallace.

Within a couple of minutes, they had doubled their advantage when Scott McMullen smashed home a tremendous drive from 20 yards that left the Stobswood keeper stranded.

The visitors were gifted a lifeline within five minutes when a speculative long-range drive from Ross Muter somehow found its way under the body of Josh Rutherford in the Shilbottle goal.

The Colliers maintained their one-goal advantage until the interval before appearing to lose their way in the second half.

Efforts to get a third decisive goal faded as the conditions got worse and Stobswood came more into the game.

Stobswood almost drew level when they got the advantage of a dubious back-pass decision, only for Josh Rutherford to get down well and turn the free-kick around a post.

Stobswood then clipped the top of the bar and Ross Muter had a good effort fly just wide as the Colliers held on to take the points.
