Colliers on a high

Springhill FC...0 Shilbottle CW...1

Sportsworld North Northumberland League, Division One

SHILBOTTLE moved to the top of the league with this hard-fought victory at the Pier Field, Berwick.

The Colliers were quickly into their stride and the first chance fell to Andy Metcalf whose well-struck effort was comfortably dealt with by the Springhill keeper.

However, Metcalf was not to be denied as he put the Colliers ahead after 15 minutes.

A long ball was headed on by Ronnie Warwick for Metcalf to race clear and finish well (0-1).

Shilbottle almost doubled their lead on the half-hour when a well-struck effort from Alan Wallace appeared to be heading for the top corner, only for the Springhill keeper to pull off a fine save.

Shilbottle led by the only goal at the interval and continued to have the bulk of the play following the restart.

Richard Brown broke clear, only to have this shot blocked by the home keeper, then substitute Robert Brown had a well-struck free-kick just turned around the post by a busy Springhill keeper.

Despite the pressure, the Colliers were unable to find a second goal that would have settled the contest, but with their defence limiting Springhill to very few chances of their own, they were able to see out time comfortably to collect a well-earned victory.
