Colliers let themselves down at the back

Rothbury FC...5 Shilbottle CW...2

North Northumberland Football League, Division One

SHILBOTTLE produced a very disappointing team performance to gift Rothbury their first points of the season at an immaculate Armstrong Park.

The Colliers made a lethargic start and found themselves a goal down after five minutes following a poor defensive play.

They had good opportunities to level the score but James Jackson glanced a header just wide and Richard Brown lobbed an effort over the bar when clean through.

Shilbottle paid dearly for these misses when on the half-hour, Colliers keeper Josh Rutherford dropped a high ball at the feet of a Rothbury forward to gift the home side a second.

A further Rothbury goal five minutes later left the Colliers with a mountain to climb but they did pull a goal back just before the break when James Jackson forced the ball home from close range.

Rothbury led by 3-1 at the interval but the Colliers began the second half in much better fettle.

Richard Brown had a good chance but shot straight at the Rothbury keeper and Jake Lewney had a goal disallowed for offside.

However, on the hour-mark, they pulled a further goal back when a Ronnie Warwick header was deflected in by a Rothbury defender.

Shibottle were now back in the game but it did not last long.

Within five minutes, Rutherford failed to deal with along through-ball, leaving a Rothbury striker to tap into an empty net.

A fifth goal for Rothbury in the last minute just served to round off a miserable day for the Colliers.
