BILCLOUGH CUP, ROUND ONE
SHILBOTTLE made progress in the Bilclough Cup with this comfortable victory at the Welfare Ground.
The visitors opened brightly and, but for a couple of smart interceptions by Shilbottle keeper Stu Shanks, they may well have taken the lead.
However, the Colliers soon moved into the driving seat and after Andy Metcalf had put a good chance wide, they took the lead after 15 minutes.
A good ball for Liam Conroy was brought under control by Alan Wallace who slipped in Richard Brown for a neat finish.
The advantage should have been doubled shortly after when Brown rounded the Rothbury keeper only to shoot over an open goal.
But now it was pretty much one-way traffic and a couple of goals just before the break confirmed the Colliers’ superiority.
A good finish from Wallace for goal number two was quickly followed by an effort by Metcalf that just cleared the goal-line before being scooped back into play.
A three-goal advantage was quickly increased following the restart when Alan Wallace seized onto a loose ball on the edge of the box to shoot home.
Many more chances came and went before Richard Brown got goal number five on the hour.
The Shilbottle scoring was completed on 70 minutes when the Colliers’ 16-year-old substitute Michael Brown got his first goal for the club, nipping in to score following a good run and pass from Adam Gattens.
Rothbury finally pulled a goal back 10 minutes before time when Jackie Angus lobbed the Shilbottle keeper on the edge of the box to shoot into an empty net but it proved to be scant consolation for his well-beaten side.
