Cobras lack bite but still emerge as winners

Alnwick Town Cobras...4 Ponteland...3

COBRAS entertained Ponteland at home on Sunday and started slowly against a decent team.

Alnwick went one up when Jonathan ‘The Rabbit’ McNickle received the ball wide, beat a man and shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner.

Despite this, Cobras were lethargic and were finding it hard to lift their game, and a defensive mistake let in Ponteland to level the game.

Another defensive mistake then put Ponteland United 2-1 up before a goalmouth scramble resulted in a Pont own-goal and the scores level once more at 2-2.

Both teams were pressing for a winner and Cobras were caught again and another mistake let in Ponteland to go 3-2 ahead.

Alnwick had to dig deep to get back in the game. Reece Graham collected the ball in midfield and played a through-ball to Archie Smith who slipped in between two defenders and curled the ball into the corner.

Both sides were battling well when a through-ball was handled on the halfway line by a Ponteland player. Kristian Atkinson stepped up to calmly slot the free-kick into the net for the win.

Cobras’ overall performance was ‘sluggish’ and all the players were under par. Managers Kevin Smith and Dave Middleton said Cobras rode their luck and were disappointed with the performance and workrate of the team.

Credit must go to a good Ponteland team.
