City snatch a draw at the death

Longhoughton Rangers A...2

Newcastle City Juniors...2

RANGERS started this game missing several key players to injury as well as others carrying slight injuries and playing through the pain barrier.

Both teams started brightly, intent on playing exciting, passing football, which brought early chances, Phil Brown pulling off some great saves and, at the opposite end, Dom Schiavetta and Jordan Beattie denied.

City Juniors took the lead as they finally managed to break through the defence of Liam Tiffin, Cameron Barreskill, Matthew Hunter and Jack Lane, but Rangers were quick to strike back. Adam Weightman was brought down on the left side after a good interchange between himself, Beattie and Michael Kirkup. Up stepped Schiavetta – at 30 yards out, this was his range to go for goal. His strike sailed over the City keeper for 1-1.

The second half saw much of the same with both sides patiently trying to find another goal.

Matthew Stephenson returned to defence from midfield to replace the injured Barreskill and Ryan Kelly slotted in nicely at left-back.

Adam Jobson continued to harry every City Juniors attack and was instrumental in every Rangers attack.

Rangers were denied a penalty when a corner from the right saw Jobson jump for the flick-on but was pushed in the back as he did so. Brown pulled off several great saves before Rangers took the lead five minutes from time.

A foul 30 yards out on the left-wing saw a Schiavetta free-kick whipped in at pace across the box and Weightman’s cleverly-flicked header hit the back of the net (1-2).

With the clock ticking down, Rangers dropped their guard and the away forward was first to the ball lifting over the advancing Brown to secure a point for the visitors (2-2).
