Blyth Spartans boss Michael Nelson hopes to announce new signing this week
Blyth Spartans manager Michael Nelson hoping to complete the signing of at least one more player over the coming days.
It has been a busy summer for the former Hartlepool United and Norwich City defender as he looks to mould a squad capable of competing in a challenging National League North division throughout the coming season.
Nelson has impressed in the transfer market this summer with the likes of former Newcastle United academy goalkeeper Brendan Pearson and former Gateshead forward Connor Thomson both impressing during pre-season.
The captures of experienced midfield duo Liam Agnew and Simon Heslop have added experience to a youthful-looking Spartans squad – and Nelson is hopeful that he will add more key figures to his squad over the next week.
“We are there or thereabouts with our squad and I would be happy if we went into the season with what we had,” explained the Spartans boss.
“But we are working hard, and we want two more players in key positions – one of them should definitely happen this week.
“The other one is a possible loan and it depends on the other club bringing in players.
“We are in a good place, I am happy with where we are at and getting Liam Agnew was a big one for us, so I am happy we got that over the line.
“Now it’s a case of wait and see what happens next for us but I can promise the supporters we are working hard.”
Spartans will get their competitive season underway with a short trip to Whitley Bay in the FA Cup second qualifying round on Saturday.
Spartans are scheduled to kick-off their National League North campaign with a visit to Guiseley next Tuesday night – although doubt remains over whether the season will commence as the National League continues to hold discussions with the government and the FA over securing a “critical financial support package”.
