PIN POINT RECRUITMENT NORTHERN ALLIANCE, PREMIER DIVISION – Alnwick Town...4 Cramlington Town...2
BASEMENT club Cramlington Town were the visitors to St James’s Park on Saturday in what was a potential banana skin for Alnwick and their title challenge.
And it was Cramlington who took a surprise lead when a back-pass led to keeper Michael Armstrong’s clearance hitting a Cramlington forward who slotted the ball home.
But Alnwick levelled soon after when Chris Moffet played a superb ball into the path of Scott McMullen who cut inside his marker and fired into the corner of the net from 20 yards out.
Dale Kennedy then hit the bar with a header but the rebound was gladly hacked away by the Cramlington side.
Alnwick went in to the interval all square against the lowly side who were gaining confidence as the half went on.
And Alnwick went behind for the second time in the match soon after the re-start after slack marking on 55 minutes let in the Cramlington forward to shoot in the corner of the net.
Alnwick responded from the kick-off as midfielder Mark Cockburn ran through and fired home from the edge of the box.
The hosts finally started to take control and the introduction of Danny Lowes was the catalyst for the turnaround as Alnwick pressed forward and they finally went in front when McMullen fired in his second goal with a crisp shot from the edge of the area in to the corner of the net.
The game was sealed soon after when another penetrating run from Lowes saw him in the penalty area and when the ball fell to him 12 yards out he lashed it into the roof of the net.
Alnwick went on the hunt for more goals as the away side tired but were unable to capitalise on a tiring side.
Alnwick were far from their best but still managed to grab the points on the day.
