Anthony Reveillere to stay at Sunderland but it’s the end for ex-Man Utd star Wes Brown

Anthony Reveillere is on the verge of penning a new Sunderland deal, but fellow veteran defender Wes Brown looks likely to leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

Reveillere and Brown are the only Sunderland first-teamers out-of-contract at the end of next month, with the Black Cats opting to wait until the conclusion of the season to decide on the futures of the two 35-year-olds.

Brown is NOT expected to be offered fresh terms to prolong the ex-England international’s four-year stay at Sunderland.

But, as reported last month, Sunderland have been in talks with Reveillere’s camp over a fresh 12-month contract after the full-back’s positive contribution since arriving on a Bosman deal last October.

Reveillere is understood to have provisionally agreed terms with Sunderland, yet the contract extension is being held up due to the uncertainty over the head coach position.

The ex-France international’s camp are waiting to see whether the next Sunderland boss gives the go-ahead to keeping Reveillere at the club after Dick Advocaat’s departure earlier this week.

A source close to Reveillere said: “We are waiting for the club to be OK with the coach in order to fix a meeting and understand if there is the idea to continue to work together.

“Anthony is very happy at Sunderland and he would like to stay. There are no problems regarding the terms of the contract.

“We are waiting for the club to call us.”

Reveillere started 15 times in the Premier League after Sunderland were forced to consider the Bosman market for an emergency defensive solution last Autumn, but he proved to be an astute addition.

However, he is only likely to be used in a back-up role next season behind Billy Jones and Patrick van Aanholt, while Sunderland may also look to recruit another left-back.

But Brown is expected to depart, with Sunderland looking to revamp their central defensive options, to leave John O’Shea as the sole veteran remaining.

Brown has enjoyed a remarkable return to the first-team picture over the last 18 months after Sunderland had offered to pay up the remainder of his contract following almost two years on the treatment table.

The former Manchester United stalwart has made 59 appearances over the last two seasons for Sunderland, even though he has continued to be troubled by niggling knee problems.
