Morpeth Sunday League round-up (Sunday, April 26, 2015)
ES Johnson Challenge Cup Final
Amble Tavern 3 Bedlington Market Tavern 1
Amble Tavern retained the trophy with a deserved victory in the battle of the inns.
The Bedlington side had the better of things in the opening 45 minutes and carved out two decent openings before taking the lead.
Stephen Young lobbed goalkeeper Stuart Shanks early on, but his effort agonisingly clipped the crossbar before going over and Shanks made a good save from Dylan Williamson when one-on-one.
Bedlington Market Tavern took the lead just before half-time as a low cross into the box deflected into the path of John Paxton.
He made no mistake with a firmly-struck close-range effort that flew into the goal.
A rejuvenated Amble emerged for the second half as they began to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Amble’s equalising goal was undoubtedly deserved, but was slightly fortuitous as a delivery into the Bedlington box cannoned off Market Tavern defender Kyle Dobson and into the bottom corner to level it.
With 20 minutes remaining, Amble took the lead as a corner fell to Matty Graham, who had his back to goal but managed to find the top corner with a well-struck shot on the turn.
The game was wrapped up only minutes from the end as Amble substitute Brad McLelland’s effort found the bottom corner via the inside of the post to seal the victory and the trophy.
Bedlington Social Club edged out Morpeth Shambles 3-2.
Stobswood recorded a fine 6-1 victory over Bedlington FC.
