The 30-year-old, who will resume his previous role within the club’s senior development squad, has been at the helm since December 2019 and guided Town to a positive end to last year’s campaign that included a run of three successive home victories.

A club statement said: “In a difficult year due to a number of national lockdowns as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Patterson has continued his work into the current campaign, working with our very young squad.

“We are delighted to retain Stephen in the club and look forward to seeing him continue his and his fellow coaches’ positive work.”

It added: "We’d like to place on record our thanks to both Stephen and his assistant Steve Mullen for all their efforts in their time in their positions.

"Both we are sure will remain prominent within the club.”

Patterson said: "Leading this great club has been the proudest thing I have done in football.

"Although the past 14 months have been an immense challenge, they have left me with incredible memories I will forever cherish.

He added: "Personally, I can't wait to get back on the training pitch and positively impact our young players."
