ESH WINNING 2-1 ALNWICK TOWN
Alnwick’s season was due to finish on April 23, but due to the poor winter weather postponements have meant an extension to the season.
This was a game Esh Winning needed a point to avoid relegation, and their victory consigned Birtley to the drop.
Alnwick went into the match on the back of a run which had seen them win six out of their last seven, and when they took a first half lead, Tom MacPherson budling the ball in from a corner, it looked as if the run might be extended.
Esh Winning gave notice of their attacking intention with a shot just wide, but at hal;f-time it remained 0-1.
Luc Glasoer had to make a good save early in the second half from Lee Hogan, but he could not prevent the home side drawing level through Hogan, whose shot found a way into the net at the near post.
And ther same player was on the mark again just a few minutes later to turn the match on its head.
Alnwick tried to force their way back into contention, creating several opening, but they failed to find a way through as conditions worsed with a snow and hail storm turning the already greasy pitch in a mudbath.
