The game was played in bright sunshine at St James’ Park in Alnwick, which was in stark contrast to the conditions faced by some other local teams at the weekend, many of whom had their games postponed because of continuing problems with waterlogged pitches.

Alnwick Ladies were indebted to their groundsman, Ian Hogg, for his efforts in getting the surface playable.

Unfortunately, against stronger opposition, Alnwick were unable to make progress to the final, losing out 2-6.

The home goals were scored by Catherine Johnston and Jade Eaton.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the local football scene, Alnwick Town first team saw their Northern Alliance Premier Division game away to Gateshead Rutherford postponed due to a waterlogged pitch – this week they are away to Shankhouse.

There were no pitch problems for the Development squad who romped to a 6-0 win over Gateshead Rutherford A on the 3g at Greensfield in the NE Combination League, a result which puts them joint top of the Division 1 table.

The U23s lost 3-1 away to Newbiggin Blacks, also in the Combination.

Meanwhile, Rothbury also saw their Northern Alliance Division 1 game away to Seaton Burn postponed – they go again this weekend with a home game against Blyth Spartans Reserves.
