West Jesmond 4-2 Alnmouth United

So close to lifting last season’s Minor Cup, finalists Alnmouth fell at the first hurdle this term and against lower league opposition.

On Walker Tech College’s artificial surface, the depleted visitors did, however, strike first when Andy Murray converted a penalty on ten minutes but found themselves trailing by half-time as Tim Clasper and Gareth Smith found the net for West Jesmond.

Smith doubled the lead straight after the turnaround only for Murray to double his penalty tally and give some hope of a come-back.

Pushing for the leveller, United were in exchange proving susceptible to the break and were effectively eliminated when Kester Young exploited defensive hesitation before lobbing ‘keeper Mick Ashurst.
