Firsts taught a lesson in finishing

Alnwick I...1

Newcastle University I...3

ON a very cold Thursday evening, Alnwick Ladies first team and Newcastle Uni battled for possession from the start.

Although Alnwick had multiple chances, Uni were first to score from a short-corner which slipped through Frew’s legs.

Alnwick continued to fight back, gaining a rewarding equaliser through Graham as a result of the good team work betweeen Graham and Britton.

Newcastle Uni proceeded to win a short-corner seconds before the half-time whistle, which they converted into a goal, ending the first half 1-2.

Both sides continued to demonstrate good team-work in the second half.

Alnwick played some excellent one-twos and midfielders Oates, Lincoln, Cook and Brown penetrated the Uni side on several occasions.

Despite some impressive shots by birthday girl Murray, the Uni defence managed to clear the ball and made further attacking breaks through the centre.

Alnwick goalie Frew made some impressive saves with fantastic stick work but she could not stop the flurry of shots with a deflection eventually hitting the back-board.

Alnwick continued to fight back until the final whistle with impressive defensive skills from Richardson, Allen and Horn, as well as some excellent attacking runs from the forwards.

Despite Alnwick’s efforts, the Uni goalkeeper continued to keep a clean sheet in the second half.

The final whistle was blown with a scoreline of 1-3.

Not the birthday fun Murray was hoping for but at least she had Cookie’s homemade cakes to look forward to back in the clubhouse.
